John A. M'LUNG. Sketches of western adventure: containing an account of the most interesting incidents connected with the settlement of the west, from 1755 to 1794: with an appendix. Revised and corrected, with engravings. Dayton, Ohio: Ells, Clafin & Co., 1847. Octavo (7 ¼ x 4 1/2in). Pp. [4] ads, [i]-viii, [9]- 315, [1] ads, with the wood-engraved frontispiece and 2 ‘plates’ being part of the pagination and the collation. (Spotting, occasionally heavy). Contemporary speckled sheep, the flat spine divided into five compartments by pairs of gilt rules, red leather label in the second compartment. (Worn, splits to joints, the upper cover almost detached, extremities rubbed, covers somewhat bowed, free endpapers lacking). A later printing of a work which Howes called "One of the best and most popular collections” of Indian adventures and captivities along the border. Thompson goes further, describing it as "the most complete collection of captivities and early adventures ever published in one volume." First published in Maysville, Ky., in 1832, this work went through 13 printings by 1879.
