Plaatje's novel was the first in English by a black African writer. It was originally published in 1930 by the Lovedale Press and this new version was published by arrangement with the original publisher. As well as in its illustrations, it has an introduction by Tim Couzens. It was the first publication in Quagga's African Fiction Library, whose general editor was Stephen Gray.
