This complete first impression copy of Moffat's most famous book is half-bound in polished brown calf with marbled paper sides, gilt title on red spine label and four raised bands. The top edge is gilt and the other edges are tinted red. Plain green endpapers, xvii + 624 pp of text and index + folding map + colour-engraved frontispiece + 22 full-page and other monochrome engravings (by G Baxter; the frontispiece being an early example of chromolithography).

The leather is rubbed at the spine, edges and corners. A binding break at the front endpaper has been unobtrusively repaired.

The endpapers are unmarked and unfoxed. The frontispiece, title page and inserted full-page plates (which are all on different paper) are foxed (see images), but the map and text pages remain bright, with no sunning or foxing, making this a relatively rare better than good copy.

The book is complete.
