A copy of Charles Reade's The Cloister and the Hearth which belonged to British Prime Minister David Lloyd George.
It is inscribed on the front endpaper, "To recall a memorable journey to Italy Nov. 1917, D. Lloyd George."
There is a printed dedication, on 10 Downing Street notepaper, to General Jan Smuts, dated 29 Nov. 1917, as directed by the British PM to his secretary Frances Louise Stevenson. It is pasted onto the front pastedown and is signed by her. Frances Louise Stevenson was Lloyd George's mistress, personal secretary, and second wife.
