'Pierneef's Johannesburg Station Panels constitute the largest single commission of landscape painting in the history of South Africa. They were painted at an important time for Afrikaner nationalism. In his landscapes Pierneef addressed the Afrikaners' nostalgia for the land, their imperialist desires, and he helped legitimize their exclusive claim to South Africa. As a self-appointed volksopvoeder Pierneef's influence far exceeded the narrow confines of artistic endeavour. In this catalogue N. J. Coetzee examines the landscape painting of J. H. Pierneef and places the artist and his work in the context of the 1920s-1930s. He offers a critical reappraisal of Pierneef from a standpoint which has, to date, been largely ignored.' - editor's note
