First edition (pp. ix, 259) with an introduction by H. Rider Haggard. Octavo (20 cm) in dark blue publisher's cloth, gilt titles to spine; maps and plates, with a large folding facsimile of a map of Africa in the Vatican Collection (1523), illustrations of crosses erected by the Portuguese on the African coast, Phoenician traces and remains.
Wilmot was commissioned to search ancient manuscripts, maps, and documents throughout archives and libraries across Europe seeking evidence of Monomotapa, the Ophir of King Solomon (notes from Port Elizabeth sale, December 1952). Other than two ex-libris copies, this very good copy is apparently the sole copy currently available.
