Original green cloth with floral design to top of front cover, and to spine, with gilt lettering to spine. Under a fictitious guise of a young soldier the authoress gives an account of six month's life and experience with Colonel A.W Durnford, who was to loose his life at Isandlwana in 1879. The writer was evidently an enthusiastic admirer of the gallant soldier, and remarks of him that his "truly Christian life was as much honoured by those who came in contact with its influence as his heroic death by the wortld at large. The book contains an oval Frontispiece with three further plates. Native Couple in their own Costume/ Camp at Bushman's River Pass/ Unkosaza and her attendant. ix plus 327 pages text 8 vo. 1880.
Ex Libris book plate to front paste-down- Willimam Jardine-Cape Town 1903. Ink inscription to front endpaper dated April 1880. Two plates have water stain to margin. Slightly cocked. Very clean copy of scarce publication.
