This is an attractive and very good copy of the first edition of the book by the two Livingstones.
xv + 608 pp of text (no index) + folding engraving of the Victoria Falls with tissue protector at the front + 35 other illustrations, including 14 inserted full-page plates + folding map at the back. There is a small engraved design on the title-page. There is a dedication page (to Lord Palmerston) as well as pages for the preface and a postscript to the preface.
BINDING AND CONDITION NOTES
Full-bound in tan calf with gilt rules on both cover panels. Gilt title lettering on red label in second spine pocket. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. All text pages, plates and map are present and undamaged.
A small piece of leather is missing from the foot of the upper board. The top of the lower board is rubbed. The gilt designs in the other spine pockets are rubbed, as are the bottom edges of the cover panels.
The front endpaper is cracked and there is another crack between pp 606/7 but without damage to the hinges and with the binding remaining tight. There are a few foxing spots on the verso of the back endpaper and the page opposite the map.
There is a March 1869 ink dedication on the fly-leaf.
The copy is otherwise unflawed, complete, unmarked and undiscoloured, making it collectable.
