The three authors were sent to West Africa by the British Government to establish a consulate at Bornu. They set out from Tripoli and travelled via Murzuk towards Chad, being the first Europeans to reach the lake. Though Oudney died en route, they established cordial relations with the sultan of Bornu and then returned, endeavouring to further explore the course of the Niger. A classic of West African exploration.471 + 467 pp with 2 frontispieces, engraved plates and folding maps. While the covers are extremely timeworn, being the original plain boards, cloth spine and labels, the textblocks are in very good, clean condition except for some foxing in prelims.
