This copy is offered to commemorate the recent hundredth anniversary of Nelson Mandela's birth.
This Afrikaans translation (translated from the English translation of the original German) falls into the category of rare Africana for an unusual reason. The version was commissioned by the Robben Island Museum (which stocked Fontein's English translation), not so much for its (at that time, few) Afrikaans-speaking visitors as for visitors from the European Low Countries. The management of the museum changed and delivery was not accepted. In the 14 years since then, the publishers have not sought an alternative distribution, this being the first copy offered for sale.
This pocket-book translation - highly praised by Harald Pakendorf - includes an invaluable pictorial record - some fifty photographs and a double-page map - from eight sources.
Laminated limp covers, printed in black and green, drawn on to 176 pp of b/w illustrated text, bibliography, chronology, index and acknowledgments, in 7 thread-sewn sections.
