The copy is not in its publisher's original red-cloth binding but has been rebound in black calf, with gilt lettering and decorations to the spine, and indigo cloth-board sides. The title wording is missing from the spine, leaving only the decorations and the author's name. Gilt top-page edge.
New plain white endpapers have been added to strengthen the binding, but the original beige free endpapers have been retained. Engraved portrait of Dr Peters as frontispiece, black-and-red title-page, xviii + 597 pp of text and index, with some 60 illustrations in the text + 32 pp of inserted monochrome plates + 28-panel 700 x 800 mm folding colour map inserted at the back.
Although the expedition was promoted as an alternative search for the Emin Pasha, using the east coast approach instead of Stanley's north and west route, Dr Peters's plan - which was not sanctioned by the German government, was to extend German influence in the region. He succeeded in this through a treaty with the Kabaka of Buganda in favour of Germany.
CONDITION. The copy is complete although, as stated above, no longer in the publisher's original binding. However, the the rebinding and contents remain in near very good condition despite the last three leaves being stained at the top and front page edges and the gilding now dulled. The frontispiece and plates are complete and very good, while the large colour map, repaired along some folds with transparent archival tape, still presents well (see image).
