Norman MAILER. The Naked and the Dead. New York & Toronto: Rhinehart & Company Inc., [1948]. Octavo (8 1/8 x 5 3/8 inches; 206 x 137 mm). Pp. [i-viii; 1-]3-721[-723]. 1 full-page map. (1/16th inch nick to upper blank margin of the title page). Original black boards, spine lettered and ruled in white, original dust-jacket with $4.00 price and photographic portrait of the author on the lower cover (boards bumped, split, repaired and re-touched at the corners, joints and head and foot of the spine; the dust-jacket in three pieces, with holes and voids, the backstrip missing the largest pieces, the backstrip lightly soiled). Provenance: Frank Dobo (inscribed in pencil on the front free endpaper ‘F.F. Dobo [sic.] / 1948’. Frank Dobo’s copy of the first edition with the Rhinehart logo just above the copyright statement on the verso of the title. The author’s debut novel: “this twenty-five-year-old author bids fair, with the publication of [this work]… , to establish a literary tradition of his own” (lower cover of the dust-jacket).

First edition, book ‘first impression’, dust-jacket ‘second impression’ with date-code ‘6709’.

Ernest HEMINGWAY. Death in the Afternoon. New York & London: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1932. Octavo (9 1/8 x 6 ¼ inches; 232 x 159 mm). Colored Cubist frontispiece by Juan Gris, 42 pages of halftone illustrations from photographs of bulls, bullfights and bullfighters. (Light old ‘tide-mark’ to title and outer edges of the book-block). Original black cloth, with gilt title and decoration on spine and the author's signature in gilt to the upper cover. (Spine dulled and slightly frayed at head and foot, some discoloration to upper cover). Provenance: ‘Percy’ (inscribed on front free endpaper ‘For Percy / November 1932’). First edition, early printing but does not have the ‘A’ on the verso of the title. This work was first published on 23 September 1932: this copy is inscribed and dated November 1932.

Original light orange cloth, spine lettered in gilt on black ground, facsimile of the author's signature blocked in black on the upper cover, original dust-jacket priced at $2.75 (Spine lightly soiled, spine chipped, lettering on spine dulled; dust-jacket in pieces, with quite substantial voids, protected in a mylar cover). Provenance: Francis F. Dobo (penciled inscription to front free endpaper ‘Dobo / 1938’). First edition, later printing without the ‘A’ on the verso of the title. Includes the author’s first full-length play.
