How it works

Register

First American (and true first) edition. 430 pages in very good, clean condition. 32 plates, including frontispiece. Two folding maps at the back of "Africa South of the Equator" and "Sketch Map of Southern Rhodesia". Green cloth with gilt titles. Tight, sound binding. Lightly worn at head and tail of spine.

In 1889, the author was the naturalist of an expedition sent by the United States Government to the west coast of Africa. For seven years he participated in the settlement and early development of Rhodesia and his memoirs cast a fascinating light on the early years of white settlement in the colony and clashes with the native inhabitants.

This title was reprinted in facsimile in 1970 as Volume 12 of the Rhodesiana Reprint Library.
