Translation: "Our Widows and Orphans . . . Words of comfort and encouragement to the widows of the two Republics. Offered in the name of their sisters in the Cape Colony"

Mrs Muller and Mrs Neethling were two of those "sisters". Their anthology - viii + 278 pp of unillustrated text - was drawn from letters, "witnesses", poetry and passages from the Bible.

Given the distance between the writers in Wellington and the publishers and printers in the Netherlands, it seems to have been something of an achievement that a second edition of the book was produced as early as 1901.

Orange boards, silver embossed and brown printed to front and spine, plain endpapers and relatively poor-quality text paper. The book has been rebound in brown Skivertex with the backstrip laid down, and new white endpapers have been inserted. The binding is now strong, but the book has to be held open. The board edges have not been repaired and these remain rubbed all round, with small pieces missing at the upper front of both boards.

Now a collectable copy.
