"Onder Witte Bergen, District Winburg" on the front free endpaper. This copy was subsequently owned by the late Andre Bezuidenhout of Bloemfontein, an attorney, provincial councillor and authority on South African postal history. His page-markers and notes reflect all these roles.

Hundreds of "kantteekeningen" (marginal notes) are printed in a 4 pp section of the prelims. In this copy, at least, these have been augmented by thin strips of typeset matter pasted on to the pages, with for example, cross-references between ordinances and notes of ordinances amended or superseded. We don't know whether this tricky hand-work was done by the publisher/printer or by a clerk in a lawyer's office: in either event the references do not go beyond 1880. There are some later marginal notes in pen and pencil. In addition to the kantteekeningen, two pages of errata are included in the prelims.

Inspection after removing the thin clear-plastic protection showed that the corners of the brown cloth-boards are bumped and rubbed, that the join between the spine and the upperboard has been repaired with adhesive tape and that one or two charaters of the spine lettering have been lost. Although cracked at the front endpaper and between pp 518/519, the binding has retained its integrity. The back endpaper is unmarked and intact.

xxxviii pp of alphabetical index at the front and other prelims + 526 pp of conventions and treaties (with the adjoining South African [Transvaal] Republic and with many countries in Europe, including Great Britain), constitution, rules of parliament, ordinances (statutes: the main body of the volume), and, on the last page, an 1877 postal convention with Natal.

In this single volume almost the whole story of the first 26 years of the Orange Free State Republic is on view - from education and health services to criminal and family law, local government, military service and so on. This is particularly valuable because of this little republic's international reputation as "a model state" (see, for example, www.sahistory.org.za).
