Original artwork to a 'view' booklet, titled “The North Coast of Devon Illustrated by Henry de Ternant." [Great Britain: undated but circa 1895]. Small oblong octavo (5 5/8 x 8in; 143 x 203mm), 15 card leaves, the rectos mounted with original ink and blue wash drawings on paper: 1p. the title (as above, 2 5/8 x 4 3/8in; 67 x 111mm), an introductory leaf (with an unidentified blue wash view with an integral six-line quote from Mathew Arnold in ink, 2 ½ x 4 1/4in; 63 x 107mm), 13 following leaves (each with a selected blue wash view, titled within the view, c. 2 ¾ x  4 ¾in; 70 x 120mm, and with quotes from ‘Westward Ho!’ to the mounts). Condition: some spotting but drawings generally excellent, chipping to mounts. Unbound.  

A beautiful series of evocative images of the best known ‘beauty spots’ in North Devon:  a masterpiece in miniature, demonstrating de Ternant’s skill and consummate sense of design. ‘Camera-ready’ and worth publishing?.

I have not been able to discover much about the artist: apparently French born, after a certain point he lived and worked in England, but his published work all seem to have originated in France, and to have been written by Victor de Ternant – a relative (brother, uncle, father?) one presumes : 1.Victor de Ternant.
