George Louis Palmella Busson DU MAURIER (1834-1896, artist). – Thomas ROBINSON (1806-1885, engraver).
Original engraved wooden printing block with manuscript titling to one side “Our Brilliant Failure / 1865 / G. du Maurier” [London?: May 1865 or earlier]. Joined two-part wooden printing block (4 ¾ x 7 ½ x 7/8in; 121 x 190 x 23mm), bolted together, by T. Robinson after du Maurier, signed in the block ‘T. Robinson’ and ‘DM’.
Spectacular – the delicacy of line that the wood engraver Thomas Robinson was able to achieve is truly amazing. The result is a printing block fully able to reproduce du Maurier’s spectacular pen and ink drawing.
The scene depicted shows the Coodler family embarking for Mudville, accompanied by The Interesting Stranger, a scene from the short story “Our Brilliant Failure / A Sketch in Ultramarine”, published in the June 1865 issue of the periodical “London Society. An Illustrated Magazine of light and amusing literature”, and bound between pp. 488 and 489.
