Willaim SHAKESPEARE. - John Massey WRIGHT (1777-1866, artist).
Original pen and ink drawing, titled on label 'A Monument to Shakespeare'. [London?: undated]. on paper (10 1/4 x 6 3/4in; 260 x 172mm.), laid down, matt, frame, but not glazed, label to backing board. Condition: some spotting. Provenance: P & D Colnaghi & Co, 14 Old Bond Street (label, with pre-1968 telephone number [see images]).
The two biggest influences in John Massey (or Masey) Wright's career as an artist were Thomas Stothard and Sahakespeare. Both are represented in the present drawing - an elaborate and never-realized monument to Shakespeare, showing the influence of Stothard's style. In fact, the Stothard-ian look of the drawing is so strong that Colgnaghi's original attribution was to Stothard rather than Wright.
