"A directory showing the movements and engagements of British regiments during the South African Campaign. The information is drawn from the chief despatches of the campaign, from regimental records and from unofficial sources. Records of the Royal Engineers, Army Service Corps, Medical Corps, Chaplain's Department, Ordnance and other departments, are included." - Hackett.

'This volume is something of an "enlarged directory" showing where any "particular regiment or battery added to, or mayhap lost, some of its reputation," and it endeavours to enumerate the "number of mentions each regiment or battery got in the chief despatches written during the war. Where casualties are mentioned, it is more to bring out the severity of the fighting in a particular engagement than to compile statistics.' Mendelssohn Vol.II, page 439

The volume offers much detail including dispatches and is an essential reference work. Original blue cloth binding, 532 pages. Uncut page edges. Light foxing first and last ten pages. One cm tear to cloth cover at spine bottom.
