Charles James THOMPSON (d.1915, recipient) - William HUTTON & Sons Ltd (silversmiths), and others (binders & calligraphers).

[PAWNBROKERS: a finely bound manuscript album, recording the subscribers to the gifts presented to Charles James Thompson,  the outgoing Honorary Secretary of their Association]. [London: dated 18th May 1911]. 17 card leaves, quarto (12 x 10in; 305 x 254mm), p.[1]: a manuscript polychrome illuminated address, heightened with gold, pp.[2-33] consists of a manuscript calligraphic alphabetic listing in red and black of the names and location of everyone who subscribed to the gifts, extra-illustrated with two related printed ephemeral items, all ‘window-mounted’ recto and verso of 17 thick card leaves. (Some spotting.)Original red morocco, elaborately decorated in gilt and blind, the upper cover with an attached hallmarked silver plaque, made by William Hutton and Sons Ltd., gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (very lightly scuffed).

An attractive memento given to Thompson when he retired after serving for ten years as the Hon. Secretary of the National Pawnbrokers Association.

The number of subscribers is substantial (over 870 names are included), and, in addition to the present album, Thompson was presented with a cheque and a ‘service of table silver’ during a banquet given in his honor, at the Venetian Salon, Holborn Restaurant, London, attended by 114 people.

Thompson teamed up with Walter Harvey to form Harvey & Thompson in July 1897. The business, now known as  H. & T. Pawnbrokers survived and prospered and is now described as ‘the UKs largest pawnbrokers’.
