Luigi CANINA (1795-1856)

Pianta Topografica Di Roma Antica Con I Principali Monumenti Ideati Nel Loro Primitivo Stato Secondo Le Ultime Scoperte E Con I Frammenti Della Marmorea Pianta Capitolina Disposti Nel Svo D' Intorno Delineata Dall'Architetto Cav L.Canina Nell' Anno … MDCCCL. Rome: 1850. Folding engraved plan (38 3/8 x 55 3/8 ins; 974 x 1400mm), in sections, backed onto cloth (some splits to folds). Provenance: Oscar Browning (1837-1923, large wood-engraved bookplate [from a design by Simeon Solomon] dated 1870, mounted on verso).

A fascinating plan of Rome: the locations of the classical buildings and monuments are overlaid onto  a map of the modern city and the central city is surrounded by classical fragments of carved marble.

The provenance is interesting: see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_Browning for more information on Browning’s life and work – including his relationship with Simeon Solomon.

‘Luigi Canina, Italian architect and archeologist, was born in Casale Monferrato in 1795 and died in Florence in 1856. He was a pupil of Ferdinando Bonsignore in Turin, and settled in Rome in 1818. Among his works are: some construction at the Villa Borghese (monumental neoclassical propylaea from Piazzale Flaminio); Casino Vagnuzzi outside of Porta del Popolo in Egyptian style; not realized projects for reconstruction of the sanctuary of Oropa (1856). He became professor of architecture at Turin, and his most important works were the excavation of Tusculum in 1829 and of the Appian Way in 1848, the results of which he embodied in a number of works published in a costly form by his patroness, the queen of Sardinia. In 1843, he was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Honorary member.’ (wikipedia)
