Lacy hunted in various locales in South Africa during the 1860s and 1870s. West of the Drakensburg Mountains, near the Bombo Hills, he and his hunting partner bagged buffalo and elephant, with some hippopotamus hunting on the Umlomati River. He relates an incident in which his partner excitedly double-charged his rifle while pursuing giraffe, then was bowled over by the recoil and concussion. He also recounts later hunting episodes after a variety of small game in the Orange Free State, and leopard hunting in Natal, with hippo bagged on the Tugela River. Lacy also spent considerable time visiting South Africa's goldfields, and spent time in New Zealand. Original gilt pictorial blue cloth with gilt titles and sporting vignette on the front cover, and gilt spine titles. Spine ends rubbed but not torn. Well illustrated with full page plates and text photos. Both inner hinges frayed but text block remains tight. Contents free of foxing.
