Here is a unique book. After years of historical research the author, wife of Dr.E.G.Malherbe, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Natal, describes by means of vividly illustrated vignettes interesting events dating from the earliest days (as far back as 700 B.C.) when Durban's land-locked bay was probably visited by venturesome seaman, up to the present time.
By means of contrasting pictorially the old and the new, the author tells how from the early years of the last century the "Seatrekkers" (i.e the British settlers) and the Voortrekkers, indispensably helped by faithful Non-Whites, were conjoined in a pioneer community, sharing hardships and fun, in building up what is today the burgeoning, multi-cultural cit of Durban....
