“Bell-Hodge” (colorist). – Henry OSPOVAT (illustrator) – Matthew ARNOLD.
Poems by … Arnold with an introduction by A.C. Benson illustrated by … Ospovat. London & New York: John Lane, 1900. Small octavo (7 3/8 x 5 inches; 87 x 127mm). Partially unopened. Frontispiece, title vignette, full-page illustrations, some small er illustrations and some decorations: 64 images in total, all after Henry Ospovat, all beautifully hand-colored by ‘Bell-Hodge’, extra-illustrated with a printed label to the front pastedown “The Illustrations in this Book were done into color by Bell-Hodge”. Original light brown buckram, upper cover and spine blocked in gilt, t.e.g. (light scuffing, spine lightly soiled and with small splits to the head and foot). Provenance: Edward Thomas Koch (bookplate on front pastedown).
Very rare, possibly unique, copy with contemporary professional hand-coloring. The spelling of ‘color’ indicates that the label and possibly the colorist was American – in any case, the results are spectacular and add a whole new dimension to Ospovat evocative illustrations of Amtthew Arnold’s somewhat overlooked poetry.
