George Quaintance, 1902 to 1957, lived and worked during an era when homosexuality was repressed and when his paintings and physique photos could not depict a penis. In an era before the Stonewall riots, the sexual revolution, gay rights, and the AIDS crisis, Quaintance and his high-camp erotic art existed in a demi-mode of legality. Half a century later the masculine fantasy world created by Quaintance, populated by Greek Gods, Latin lovers, lusty cowboys and chiseled ranch hands, retains its seductive allure. His highly prized oil paintings numbered just 55. As the preeminent male physique artist of the 1940s and early 1950s, his work for the early gay titles 'Physique Pictorial', 'Demi Gods', and 'Body Beautiful' inspired a generation of artists including Harry Bush, Etienne and Tom of Finland. Text by Reed Massengill with a Commentary on the complete works by Ken Furtado. Hugely well illustrated including 4 oversized fold-out plates.
Gilt title on black cloth boards. 166pp illustrated folio. English, French, & German text and captions.
