HOVEY & Co.] A sample silk stocking (28 inches long), with accompanying autograph material (a partial letter ‘I send as promised the Queen’s silk stocking’ [probably 1887] and associated C.F. Hovey & Co. envelope ‘Sample of Silk Hose made for her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria’).
The partial letter, from an unidentified correspondent, reads “My dear Mandell / I send as promised / the Queen’s silk stocking - / this is the quality Her / Majesty wore on Jubilee / day – you must not / forget to tell that the same / man makes then now / that made them 50 years / ago (He is about 80) and are made of course by hand one at a time”.
