Leibbrandt dedicated his book to the Colonial Secretary of the Cape, John Tudhope. His survey begins with the appointment of Willem Adriaan van der Stel as governor of the Cape in succession to his father, Simon, and ends, nineteen chapters and a few years later, with the announcement of a bumper wool crop and the belief that this could be exported.
This was John Hays Hammond's - and later Natalie H Hammond's - copy. John Hays Hammond was the author of The Truth About the Jameson Raid and other books.
