xxvii + 263 + (20 index) pages, 2 frontispieces – original photographs of a bust and a drawing of Milton, 25 plates of manuscript pages and notes by Milton (margin plate XIII at page 164 is torn slightly affecting the printed area), unusual binding (by J.Wright) in green morocco over bevelled boards with sunken wooden panels in both boards depicting scenes from Paradise Lost, gilt decoration and titling on the spine – the leather is worn at the top and bottom of the spine and at the corners, top edge gilt, presentation inscription on the front free endpaper (‘Presented to Samuel Robins, Esq., by Mrs S. Leigh Sotheby, August 26th /61’), some foxing throughout.
