Color plates— LeatherTomes: Historia genealógica de las familias más antiguas
Circa: 1908
Ortega y Pérez Gallardo Ricardo. 190810. Historia Genealógica De Las Familias Más Antiguas De México. 3d ed. corr. y aumentada ed. México: Imprenta de A. Carranza y hijos.
México, Imprenta de A. Carranza y Comp., 1908.-10. Profusion of historical data and documents illustrated with beautiful chromolithographic plates of coats of arms.
3 large volumes, standing about 13 inches tall, strikingly bound in full lipstick red leather with gilt design stamping and lettering on spines and covers. Despite some signs of wear, including tape repairs and scuffing to the spine ends, the covers remain striking in their appearance. Note the tape repairs, wear to spine ends, hinges starting or already split, end papers usually creased. We believe the set was rebound in the mid-century, or at least had endpapers replaced. No matter. The text is clean, with hardly any toning or wear, and the many plates are stunning, each an exquisite example of chromografphic art. Note that the protective glassine sheets have tacked lightly to some of the plates.
The previous owner searched for over 10 years before finding this set in Iberian bookshop nearly 40 years ago. Said it cost a small fortune but became the pride of his genealogy library. Even in the age of internet finding the three volumes intact can prove a test of one’s patience and search skills. Though reprints and digital copies abound, the beauty and intricacies of the colorful plates — each suitable for framing, just saying— are invariably lost.
Creator: Ortega y Pérez Gallardo, Ricardo, 1863-1910.
