From the introduction by R.B. Colvin, Late-Lieutenant-Colonel Commanding XXth Battalion, I.Y. ‘The records of the XXth Battalion I.Y., a regiment called into a short existence in the years 1900-1901, have been compiled by Captain Mackenzie Rew, from his own and other officers' diaries ... suffice it to say that this short history of the Rough Riders will revive memories already becoming dim; it will recall days which to many of us were the most eventful in our lives ... and also place on record the work done by a regiment which, without any pretentions to fame, can truly assert that it faithfully served its country.'

The presentation inscription on a front free endpaper reads: ‘To A.F. McAdam Esq with the author's best wishes H.G. McKenzie Rew.'
