The manual is interesting for the course content of (white) primary schools prescribed exactly one hundred years ago. The requirements seem high compared with some later periods in the country's history. The range of courses (starting with preparatory courses for sub-standards) is also comprehensive. (See image)

This is an extract from the history paragraph in the introduction: " . . . the younger pupils will hear stories based on the stirring events of South African history. They will at the same time learn something of Julius Caesar and Hannibal, Alfred the Great and William the Conqueror, Richard Coeur de Lion and Joan of Arc, William the Silent and the Spanish Armada, Admirals Blake and Tromp, Wolfe and Clive, Napoleon and Nelson."

This director of education later became Sir John Adamson, with a school named after him.

The red cloth-laminated wraps, printed in black to the front only have a faded stamp at the top and a crease at the lower corner. The two languages are on opposite pages. 165 pp of unmarked undiscoloured text.
