Quarter-bound with dark-blue cloth spine and light-blue paper-board sides. Plain endpapers. viii including errata + 327 pp of text + 8-fold colour map inserted at the back. The sections are stitched (wire-stapled) into the spine and, unusually, this method of binding, with a rounded spine, remains tight, with the book also opening easily.
- The text is in Nederlands.
Kimberley was the start of both of the routes Rhodes made with two companions and a support group.
- The first and shorter route proceeded to Mafeking and Fort Tuli in the British South Africa Company's territory before turning south to Pretoria and returning to Kimberley.
- The second followed the first to Fort Tuli before continuing to Fort Salisbury and turning east to Beira. This journey continued by sea from Beira to Inhambane and Delagoa Bay, all in Portuguese territory, and then to Durban, East London and Port Elizabeth.
This is an unusually good copy, especially for its crisp undamaged folding map, rarely seen in this fine condition, which was prepared for De Bussy, the publishers, and which includes an inset map of the Netherlands and Belgium on the same scale.
