This is a very good copy of the first edition of Scully well-known autobiography. He dedicates to his six children "this record of their father's early wanderings over the yet-unveiled face of South Africa".

The collection of reminiscences of the author's 45 years in South Africa was originally published serially "in a more or less abridged form" in The State of South Africa.

The original maroon cloth-boards, gilt lettered to the upper panel and spine, are lightly rubbed at the front and the extremities. The binding is tight. The free leaves of the plain endpapers are sunned. The top ege is gilt, with the other edges untrimmed and some pages still uncut. The title page is printed in red and black. The contents - 320 pp of text and index printed on heavy wove papers + frontispiece of the author and 15 other inserted plates - are and unmarked but with light spotting to a few early leaves and the index.
