The four volumes of this set are bound as two, in chronologal order - namely (1) Vols I and II of the Minutes of Evidence (Cd 1790, xii + 534 pp; and Cd 1791, x + 720 pp); and (2) Appendices 1-60 to the Minutes of Evidence (Cd 1792, ii + 445 pp) and the Report and Appendices to the Report (Cd 1789, xiii + 316 pp).
The four original "blue books" have been bound into matching quarter-bound black calf and black cloth volumes. These have green-and-white head-bands and five raised spine bands with gilt rules and gilt lettering on brown morocco panels. All page edges are red-speckled.
A few slight scuff marks on the cover panels of the second bound volume are all that prevent the set from being rated mint. The 2042 pp of original material are fine, unmarked and undiscoloured.
A full appreciation of the response of the United Kingdom Government of the day to the events leading up to the Anglo-Boer War, as well as to the war itself and the necessary improvements to British military machinery must include reference to the published record of this commission.
A better set than this would be difficult to source.
