(Marginal damage to pp.65/66,  69/70 and 131/132). Original red patterned cloth, lettered in gilt and blocked in blind, cream-glazed endpapers (damage to spine, some soiling, corners rubbed). Provenance: Lower Kingsmead Library (partially erased inscription at foot of title, p.45 inscription, pencilled underlinings or notes on pp. 32, 109, 111, 112, 113, 193, 195, 203).

A second edition of a rare work, first published in 1860. The author “a Presbyterian minister, was born at Futtehpoor, India, in 1826. He was educated in the mission-school there, and, on a visit to America, entered Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania, but was compelled to return to his native land without graduating.
