A significant  Rev. War sermon which framing  the young country as God’s American Israel, the fulfillment of Christian prophecy.  Stiles  builds an argument justifying continued expansion of the United States,  drawing upon examples of military and political and maneuverings throughout history, with an emphasis on the Revolutionary War strategist, heroes, and developments, and in the process identifying many of the themes which will inform American doctrine, historical perspective, and government policy over the coming years.  It’s familiar pronouncements still echo in today’s debates, giving the work a prescient feel :

“Another object of great attention in America, will be commerce.”  

“Dominion is founded in property; and resides where that is, whether in the hands of the few or many. ..A free tenure of land, and equitable distribution of property, enters into the foundation of a happy state… property, enters into the foundation of a happy state… Connection with this will be a general spirit and principle of self-defense, Defense of our property, liberty, country.
