The album begins with photographs of the Armadale Castle leaving Southampton and calling at Madeira. Most of the photographs are captioned but there is insufficient evidence to identify the photographer or his or her family and friends.

As well as the photographs of Smuts, one of the clearer portraits shows "Mr Pratt" (looking like an earlier Duke of Windsor) "at Home" with his family (the two ladies sitting on the running-board) in front of a canvas-top convertible saloon of the period (the 1920s).

The Matopos, Victoria Falls and Birchenough Bridge are also featured.

There are a total of 24 leaves (48 pp) and 112 sepia prints (bromides) and the overall condition of the album and the photographs is very good.
