All the copies which the Abbe made in Rhodesia-tracing wherever possible directly from the rock face and working often under extremely difficult conditions-are reproduced in this book. Most of the paintings he copied in the district of Fort Victoria have never before been published and are largely unknown. As a group they form a remarkable subject of study, and some of the individual figures, such as the leaping Warrior of Chehonondo, or the Great Man of Chamavara, poised as in a slow-motion dance, are of outstanding interest. The text includes the Abbe's detailed description of each painting; and a final chapter is devoted to sites in other parts of Rhodesia, some of which he had visited as early as 1929.
There are in all 63 colour plates, reproduced by the collotype and hand-stencil process, 19 photographs in monochrome collotype, and 3 line illustrations. A notable foreward by M. Roger Heim, President of the Singer-Polignac Foundation in Paris and himself a leading scientist, pays tribute to Henri Breuil, without whose energy and genius " prehistory would not have become what it is today".
