This is one of the finest books to have been produced in South Africa in the past twenty-five years. As well as the informed text and marvellous photography, the design, by Willem Jordaan, the reproduction, by Hirt and Carter, and the printing and binding, by National Book Printers, are all superb.
The previous owner, to whom the Fagans dedicated this copy, kept the book in pristine condition, so that, when it was removed for inspection and photography from its protective wrapping, it still looked new.
The dustjacket has two very small chips at the foot of the spine. The cloth-boards are indistinguishable from new. There are two small brown marks on the front leaf of the plain grey endpapers. The penned inscription - "Vir Johanna / In vriendskap / Gwen Fagan / Gawie Fagan" - is opposite the title page. The 271 pp of profusely illustrated text on heavy matt art paper are unmarked throughout and there is no hint that the pages were ever turned without gloves.
The author's final acknowledgment is to "My husband, who by financing this book, has made it available at a reasonable price".
