Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography volume 2 page 51:Major Moodie left South Africa in 1829 settled in Canada in 1832, serving for some time in the "Provincial Militia," and being afterwards raised to the rank of Captain and Paymaster. Later on he was selected for the post of Sheriff of Hastings, an appointment he retained for many years, but he subsequently employed a Deputy Sheriff, and in doing so “unwittingly transgressed the law in the transaction," involved himself in a series of lawsuits, and was finally compelled to relinquish his appointment. Mr. Moodie states in the Introduction, “I look to this little book as a means of support for my wife, now advanced in years, and myself," and he relates many interesting details respecting his career, and the fortunes of other members of the Moodie family. The five chapters entitled South Africa and its inhabitants are, in the main, reproduced from the author's earlier work, Ten Years in South Africa.
