The two volumes have been attractively rebound in maroon leathercloth-boards with new pattered cream endpapers.
Vol I. xi + 426 pp of text + folding map + about 100 monochrome illustrations, half in the text and the others inserted platesl. Vol II. xi + 479 pp of text + index for both volumes + about 100 monochrome illustrations in the text.
Holub, a medical doctor began his South African adventure in Port Elizabeth, moving leisurely to many places in the Karoo, to the diamond mines and as far as the Victoria Falls. Sometimes he practised but more often he explored, making botanical and wild life notes and drawings.
His work has been reissued in facsimile but the first English edition of 1881 is now comparatively rare.
This set has a few shortcomings but is in better than good condition overall. The repaired covers and endpapers are clean and in very good conditon. The title-pages and other early pages have library stamps but no ownership or other markings. The illustrations are all present and generally very good while the text is mainly clean although with brown staining to some pages, more so in Vol II. The Vol I map is complete but in poor condition, being torn into three sections and needing a careful repair. The reserve has been reduced accordingly, but the successful bidder will be rewarded with a set that retains its original attraction.
