An uncommon and historically important map by John Arrowsmith of the early development of what became the Boer Republic of Orange Free State and the south-western part of the Republic of the Transvaal (the latter AKA South African Republic). The Orange River Sovereignty was short lived and only a few maps depict its existence.
The Orange River Sovereignty was established in 1848 by the British and it became an independent republic in 1854. The map illustrated J.J. Freeman's book A Tour of South Africa, published in 1851.
This map is a lithograph with outline hand-colouring. The right margin has been reversibly extended with Japanese tissue paper to enable easy framing. The map still shows its original folds and areas of fold weakness have been professional strengthened on the verso, also using archival tissue paper.
