Octavo. An excellent sporting title, this features all manner of big game hunting in the regions southwest of Hargeisa on Peel's first expedition, then through the Haud and Ogaden on his second. The author's hunting party bagged gazelle, rhinoceros, hartebeest, lion, oryx and lesser kudu, as well as experiencing some hair raising encounters with leopards. The rhino Peel bagged was hit eleven times and severely injured a gun bearer before finally succumbing (Czech, p. 216).
Original light green cloth with gilt vignette on the cover and gilt spine titles. Cloth a little soiled, spine darkened as usual. Spine ends lightly frayed. Contents clean and tight with no foxing. Original endpapers firm and tight. Well illustrated with full page plates by E. Caldwell, photos, and text drawings. Folding map at rear. This copy was given as a school prize with a gilt device on the rear cover and a prize label on the front pastedown.
