How it works

10 pages, printed blue light card wrappers.

Dawson describes how he joined the Volunteers, 'Having previously (in December 1899) offered myself as a volunteer officer for active employment in the war, and not having been fortunate enough to be accepted, in January 1900 I obtained leave of absence from my civil service appointment, and went to Calcutta to join the Mounted Infantry which was then being raised for service in South Africa. Colonel D.M. Lumsden (Surma Valley Lighe Horse), who had obtained the sanction of the Government to raise the regiment, and made a generous donation…it was a corps of gentlemen….most of us could shoot fairly straight.'
