Illustrated by A Series of One Hundred and Four Permanent Photographs

First edition: unpaginated (4 pages of text and 50 pages of photographs), 104 original photographs laid down on thick card with printed captions, all the photographs are 190 x 125 mm - with the exception of 4 which are full page (230 x 330 mm), tear repaired at the bottom edge of the title page, original blind stamped black morocco with bevelled boards – expertly rebacked with matching leather, titled gilt on the upper cover and with gilt border, all edges gilt. London agents Stafford & Guy printed in gilt on the front paste-down end paper, slight foxing on the page edges, the photographs are in an excellent state.

Copies of this Album could be bought in four variant bindings. This copy in the “French Morocco, Gilt Tooled…£5.0.0.”

This volume is probably both the finest and the rarest of the many photographic publications on S.A. in the late 19th century. The technical quality of the photographs is excellent and they remain in excellent condition. There are views of the entire country, but with a concentration on mining; also tribal studies (especially Zulus), scenes of river- and seaports, of town and country, and of waterfalls and hunting scenes. The regional division is as follows: Cape Town and the peninsula (8), Knysna and the Garden Route (5), Port Elizabeth (some very fine views) and environs (13), Cape Midlands and Karoo (6), Eastern Cape (9), Zululand (4), O.F.S. (1), Natal (10), Transvaal (17) - including one of a Boer War battlefield, 'Bronker's Spruit', Kimberley and the Diamond Fields (9), Johannesburg and the Witwatersrand (6). The last 14 photographs feature Barberton and the Lowveld (12) and Lydenburg (2), and portray the extensive and ambitious gold mining being carried on at those two locations.
