THE NEW TESTAMENT IN THE NAMA-LANGUAGE, (Khoekhoegowab, also known as Nama or Damara), Edited By J. G. Krönlein, Missionary To The Rhenish Miss. Society, Printed On The Expenses Of The "British And Foreign Bible-society".
418 pages, contemporary full leather with the remnants of gilt titling on the spine, contents clean and free of foxing.
Johann Georg Krönlein (Segnitz, Bavaria, 19 March 1826 – Wynberg, Cape Colony, 27 January 1892) was head of the Rhenish Mission in Namaland from 1851, founder of Berseba and Keetmanshoop. His Nama New Testament, revised by Hermann Kreft, is the foundation of all later Nama scripture translation, preceding the first complete Nama Bible of 1966 by a century. The edition was 5,000 copies, which seems very large for the time, printed in the same year at the expense of the British and Foreign Bible Society.
A historically significant copy which belonged to the Namibian leader Hendrik Witbooi and his family was taken as colonial war booty before 1902 and kept for over a century at the Linden-Museum in Stuttgart. In recent years, it has been a focal point of high-profile international provenance and cultural repatriation dialogues between Germany and Namibia.(Humbolt-University, Zu Berlin)
