The Structure of Things Then is the culmination of 15 years of photography, consisting of 136 evocative black and white photos reflecting the relationships between the structures and forces that shaped south Africa between 1952 and 1990. Goldblatt refers to this period as "the era of Baaskap" or White domination. There is an "Extended Captions" section giving more detail of each photo and an Essay by Neville Dubow entitled Constructs: Reflections on a Thinking Eye. This copy is signed and dated by David Goldblatt.
