SIGNED by Speer on the front endpaper. 671pp. Original German first edition.

'Albert Speer (1905-1981) was Hitler's architect and Minister of Armaments and War Production. At one point he was even seen as Hitler's possible successor. He received his degree in architecture in 1927 and became a member of the Nazi Party after hearing a speech by Hitler at his university. Hitler soon noticed his talents as both an architect and organizer and made him part of the Führer's inner circle. Together they made plans for a new style of architecture which would best represent the magnificence of the Third Reich. When the war broke out there weren't many funds availible for an expensive building project, but in 1942 the minister of Armaments, Fitz Todt, died in an aeroplane accident and so Speer became his successor. Because of his talent as an organizer German armaments production forged ahead without delay and it is believed that, because of this, the war was extended by two years.

He was arrested by the Americans in 1945 and appeared at the Nurenberg trials on 20 June. Although he declared that the role he played was a purely technological and economical one, and that the concentration camps and persecution of minorities did not lie within his list of responsibilities, he appears to have shown little remorse and received a relatively light sentence.

He spent 20 years in jail at Spandau where he wrote his diary which was later published in 1975.   He wrote three books after he was released and was a popular personality due to his intimate and unique knowledge of the inner workings of the Third Reich.'
