The detailed diaries of the naturalist and officer of the second half of Stanley\'s farcical expedition across Africa to rescue the unwilling Emin Pasha in Equatoria. The author did not complete this last of the great transcontinental treks, and died of fever a thousand miles up the Congo river. He and Barttelot (see Lot #71) were to bear the brunt of the blame that Stanley apportioned for the failure of the expedition to progress - thus the sharp rebuttal of these two books to Stanley\'s lionized work.455 pp with numerous text illustrations and bw plates, two folding maps with spot colour at rear. In contemporary half calf with marbled board, richly gilt decorated on spine; hinges have been skilfully and professionally restored; bookplate on prelims. The textblock is in excellent clean condition.
