The author, one of the iconic leaders of the ANC, writes that the struggle was rooted in the rebuilding of the liberation movement after the setback of Rivonia which saw the leaders of the revolution (including himself) imprisoned. In this book he also reminds us of the role of the traditional tribal authorities in the struggle - authorities which had been placed by the apartheid regime to apply the Bantu Areas Act to the rural populations. Such a one  was Chief Buthelezi, who was suborned to propping up the Apartheid Government .Foreword by (now vice-president) Cyril Ramaphosa.
